Hematopoietic and Neuronal Development We use zebrafish to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which diverse and specialized cell types are developed during the vertebrate embryogenesis. Currently, our laboratory is focusing in two areas. First, we are working to define the genetic pathways underlying hematopoiesis. We are especially interested in identifying those factors that mediate the initial determination and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells, and progenitor cells for erythroid and lymphoid lineages. Secondly, we are studying the genetic basis underlying the neural development, focusing on the forebrain and its associated anterior structures. We are also developing new technologies, such as genetic knockout, for zebrafish in order to better address fundamental questions raised in our studies. Systematic screens using genetic and molecular approaches are being carried out to identify key factors involved in hematopoietic and neuronal development of zebrafish. Given that developmental programs are well conserved among vertebrate animals, our studies in zebrafish should ultimately lead to a better understanding of the molecular and genetic basis underlying human development.

Shuo Lin is a developmental biologist and geneticist who has served on the UCLA College of Life Science faculty since he joined the Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology in 2001. He became a full professor in 2003. Prior to joining UCLA he was a faculty member at Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Lin earned his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry at Boston University School of Medicine in 1991. He was a postdoctoral fellow in Nancy Hopkins? laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1991-1995, where he worked on genetic studies of zebrafish. Dr. Lin is actively involved in graduate education and biomedical research. His laboratory research centers on genetics of hematopoietic/vascular development and organogenesis.
