Research Interests:

Developing technologies to make molecular imaging more accessible
My laboratory is interested in making cutting edge molecular imaging methods (e.g. positron emission tomography, PET) more accessible. We are developing improved ways to produce diverse PET tracers at lower cost for research and clinical use. Our research involves developing new automated and miniaturized technologies to streamline all phases of the tracer production process. We also produce tracers for various research groups for imaging of various biological processes (including metabolism, gene expression, cell proliferation, etc.), and we produce labeled peptides and proteins to image receptors and structural proteins with high specificity. We collaborate with several groups on the development of novel PET tracers and on the development of new chemistry approaches for simplified tracer production.

Technical Research Interest:

Microfluidics and automation in molecular imaging (e.g., production of radiopharmaceuticals, and molecular imaging assays)
My group is interested in novel microfluidic technologies and automated systems for solving problems in cancer research and molecular imaging. Recent and current technology development projects include: (i) development a flexible radiosynthesizer and software for automated production of diverse radiolabeled tracers for positron emission tomography (PET); (ii) development of microscale approaches for each step of the PET tracer production process, with the goal of enabling benchtop production of tracers on demand; (iii) microchip-based synthesis platform to leverage the advantages of microliter-scale synthesis of molecular imaging tracers; (iv) miniaturized methods for quality control testing of PET tracers; (v) high-throughput platforms for PET tracer discovery and optimization; and (vi) technology platforms for in vitro evaluation of molecular imaging tracers. Because we are developing technology tools that we hope can ultimately be used by others and automated, we emphasize issues such as robustness, reliability, manufacturability, and user interface in our approaches. In addition to technology development, we produce known PET tracers for imaging studies by various on-campus and external groups, we assist in the development of novel PET tracers, and we assist in the development of novel chemistry approaches for radiolabeling.
